Be still

"Be still." --> Psalm 46:10; Exodus 14:14; and Psalm 37:7. __________________________________________________________________________________

There are many times in the Word where the Lord tells His people to “be still.” And there are many different reasons as to why He would tell His children to be still. There are three verses that come to mind when I hear the words “be still.” Psalm 46:10; Exodus 14:14; and Psalm 37:7. _____________________________________

Be still with Ease

To be still is a sign of reverence and a time to be renewed. There is one verse in particular that comes to mind when I hear the words “be still.” I immediately go to Psalm 46:10 where it simply says “”He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.””

While Martha is cleaning and preparing her home for guests, her sister is found sitting at the feet of Jesus. The story takes a turn when Martha confronts Jesus and asks Him to make Mary help. Jesus saw Mary where she was and saw that she genuinely needed to hear what He was speaking, but because Martha allowed the busyness of life to control her motives she lacked intimacy with Jesus. I want to let you in on a little secret, intimacy is stolen from the enemy of busyness. Did you catch that? When you are too busy, you miss out on the moments to dive into intimacy.

In that verse it talks about understanding who God is. However, before we are able to know who God is, we are called to be still. This verse takes me to a beautiful story in Luke where there are many characters mentioned, but only three are significant. We are shown two sisters who live similar lives, yet are doing drastically different tasks. We see Martha who is cleaning and preparing, then we see Mary who is sitting and listening.

Now, what I don’t want you to think is that Martha is bad for doing any of the things in life. In fact what she is doing is good, but she could be doing better. Martha may not have wanted her home to look messy or unkempt, especially if Jesus was in her home. However, Jesus was not concerned with the food not being prepared. Jesus was the food. He was and still is the bread of life. Mary saw that and sat at Jesus' feet and ate on every word He spoke. Martha did not, she cleaned and cooked. Therefore, she was not satisfied with what was already in her home.

When desiring to have a clean home, good food on the table, nice and healthy body, and a great career it does come with much preparation. However, there comes a time when we are meant to sit down, be still and silent.
